Does Tailwind load less CSS than Bootstrap? It depends on the production build

I wouldn’t choose between Tailwind CSS 4.3 and Bootstrap 5.3 based on “which one is lighter”: the final size depends on how you build the project. Here’s what I’d check in production.

Tailwind CSS 4.3 detects complete class names in your source files and generates the corresponding utilities. There’s a common pitfall:

  • ✅ bg-blue-600 and bg-red-600 written out in full
  • ❌ bg-${color}-600

The compiler doesn’t interpret that interpolation to discover every possible color.

Bootstrap 5.3 also gives you two paths: include its compiled CSS, or build a version with Sass by importing the parts you need.

That’s why I wouldn’t pick one based on “Tailwind is lighter” or “Bootstrap is heavier.” I’d check the actual result:

  • CSS transferred in production.
  • Unused CSS on representative routes and states.
  • Impact on page rendering.

Tailwind makes it easy to generate utilities from the classes it detects. Bootstrap offers ready-made components and supports selective compilation. The final size depends on how you build the project.

Have you compared the final CSS of both in a real project?
