Server Action or API in Next.js 16.4? When to use each one
Both can save data; the difference is who needs to call the operation. My rule: a form in the app itself, Server Action; an integration or external client, Route Handler.

Both can save data. The difference is who needs to call that operation.
If a user clicks “Save” on a form in my application, I can use a Server Action. It’s a server function marked with use server; Next.js handles calling it via POST and can update the UI as part of the same flow.
If an external service needs to send me information—a webhook, for example—I use a Route Handler in app/api/.../route.ts. There I expose an HTTP URL and explicitly define the method, the response, and the status code.
There are two details I always check:
use serverdoesn’t make a function private. The Action can receive direct requests, so I verify authentication, permissions, and data inside it.- If a Server Component only needs to read my database, I query the source directly. Calling my own API adds an unnecessary HTTP request.
My decision rule: a form in the app itself → Server Action; an integration or external client → Route Handler. The business logic can be shared between the two without duplicating it.
